I'm

About

I am Shiv Shankar Singh, a dedicated young researcher and data science professional. My work merges the intriguing realms of research and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on creating machine learning models and simulations to facilitate understanding of various natural phenomena.
My proficiency in data science is demonstrated through multiple machine learning projects, such as image classification, using both Principal Component Analysis and Convolutional Neural Networks. Further, I have extensive experience with handling and interpreting large datasets, which I use for insightful data visualization and predictive modelling.

Young Researcher & student.

I have a masters degree from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali. I am currently looking for PhD opportunities in computational modelling and simulations to understand various real-world phenonmenas.

One of my recent key projects involves collaboration with the Weather and Climate Modelling group at IISER-M. Here, I work with large historical datasets to study weather patterns and project future climate conditions. At present, I am developing an automated system to calculate climate indices using temperature and precipitation data, which holds potential to significantly inform climate change policies. I hold a Master's degree in Physics from IISER Mohali, along with a minor in Data Science and Machine Learning. Additionally, I have a specialization in Applied Data Science and Machine Learning from the University of Michigan.

Professional Experience

Long Term Research Project

April 2023 - Present

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:Climate Indices Pipeline
  • Project Guide: Dr Raju Attada
  • Overview: Developing an automated pipeline to calculate climate indices, employing large historical datasets and CMIP6 simulations. It will provide significant insights towards climate change strategies, playing a pivotal role in climate research and policy planning
  • Software Publication: Shiv Shankar Singh1, Akshit Nanda1, Dr Raju Attada1. (2023). Climate Library: A Python Library for Climate Indices climate-library (v1.0.0).DOI: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8327487, GitHub: github.com/shiv3679/climate-indices

Masters Thesis

August 2022 - April 2023

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:Simulation studies of black holes originating in globular clusters
  • Project Guide: Prof. Jasjeet Singh Bagla
  • Overview: In this project, We wish to understand how massive Black Holes moving through the halo affect the dynamics of the globular clusters. Does supermassive blackholes get captured by the halo system or they escapte the system using n-body simulations. We use barnes-hut algorithm for n-body codes which utilises the use of oct-tree data structure which reduces the computational resources used in the simulation.

Summer Research Projects

May 2022- August 2022

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:N-Body Simulation of Plummer Halo systems
  • Project Guide:Prof Jasjeet Singh Bagla
  • Overview:This is the prelimnary work for my Masters thesis where we aim to create a plummer halo model and do n-body Simulation on the model to verify the theoritical properties of plummer halo models such time-stationary equilibrium.
May 2021- July 2021

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:Computer Vision for online attendence system using Machine learning
  • Project Guide:Dr Kuljeet Singh Sandhu
  • Overview:This project aimed at developing Machine Learning (un-supervised) algorithm to train computers for object detection using basic PCA (Principal Component Analysis). We tried to make a working face detection attendance system.
May 2019- July 2019

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:Trajectory of photons near massively compact objects (Black Holes)
  • Project Guide:Prof Jasjeet Singh Bagla
  • Overview:This project aimed at studying the behaviour of light (photons) near the Blackhole and it's trajectory as the whole. In this project, we played around with the Minkowski Spacetime and its equations to calculate the distance of closest approach around a black hole for photons. We also learned about Gravitational lensing and how it can be used to probe dark matter and how much dark matter there is in the Universe, and also how it is distributed.

Semester Research Projects

August 2022- December 2022

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali

  • Title:Recommender system using Recurring Neural Networks (RNN) and Convulated Neural Networks (CNN)
  • Project Guide:Dr Sarabjot Singh Anand
  • Overview:The task was to build two intelligent bots which would work together to generate recommendations for the consuming users
(BOT-1)The article recommender: This bot selects articles to serve a user.
(BOT-2)The user profiler: Once the user starts consuming news stories, (s)he leaves behind a clickstream of articles that (s)he has read. This bot uses the clickstream to build a profile of the user and then recommends articles to the user based on the profile.
